Tips for Creating a New Job Title

Do’s:

  • Develop a protocol. Having a system helps avoid bias.

  • Focus on skills and expertise.

  • Consider employee input on their new job.

  • Be specific.

  • Include the level of seniority.

  • Common titles make your job easier for applicants and search engines to find.

Don’ts:

  • Don’t use industry jargon or inside jokes.

  • Avoid abbreviations and acronyms.

  • Avoid superlatives or internal references.

  • Leave out extraneous information.

  • Avoid title inflation.

  • Think long term. Fun and funky job titles are hard to recruit for.
