Biography of Courtney Fong, MBA, JD
Mr. Courtney Fong, MBA, JD is a legal and privacy expert with deep expertise in corporate governance and implementation of financial services. He has a breadth of experiences and a diverse perspective to contribute to financial, technology and education industries.
Mr. Fong has been the Chief Legal Officer and Chief Privacy Officer of CompTIA since 2018, with responsibility for the overall legal, privacy, and compliance functions of the organization. His role includes managing an internal team and overseeing the work of a global network of outside counsel. He works closely with the CompTIA Board and serves as its Secretary, attending meetings of the Executive Committee, Audit Committee, and Governance Committee.
Prior to CompTIA, Mr. Fong served as the General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer of Castle Creek Arbitrage LLC. He also served as the Money Laundering Reporting Officer (MLRO) and Compliance Officer of its UK affiliate. At Castle Creek, he was a member of the company’s executive team and guided the company’s global legal, privacy, and compliance functions.
Previously, Mr. Fong served as General Counsel of Achievement Asset Management LLC, a $2.3B hedge fund manager. At Achievement he provided counsel to the Board of its Cayman Islands funds. Prior to joining Achievement, he served as Legal Director at HFR Asset Management LLC, a hedge fund platform that managed over $4.5B in assets at its peak. At HFR he oversaw the onboarding of new hedge fund managers, opening of brokerage arrangements, and due diligence.
Mr. Fong began his career as a computer consultant in Chicago. He holds the designations of NACD Governance Fellow and Certified Information Privacy Manager. He is also an Adjunct Professor of Law.
Mr. Fong currently serves as a director and Secretary of CompTIA, a 501(c)(6) trade association dedicated to advancing the global technology industry through education, certification, and advocacy. He also serves as a director and Secretary of Creating IT Futures Foundation, CompTIA’s charitable foundation. He has previously served on a number of bar association boards, most recently as Vice President for Finance and Development of the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association, chairing its Finance and Investment Committees. In addition, he is a past President of the Chinese American Bar Association of Chicago.
Mr. Fong holds a Bachelor of Philosophy in Communication from Northwestern University, an M.B.A. from Illinois Institute of Technology, and a Juris Doctor from IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law. He is a diversity and inclusion champion and regularly speaks at industry events. He presented his first TEDx talk in 2017 titled, A Smile Can Change a Moment. Mr. Fong serves on the board of directors of the Executive Service Corps (ESC).
